Product History

Meeting publishers' evolving needs

AVATAR was originally developed as a generic package for any organisation requiring financial ledgers and/or distribution software. Original users included the Royal National Theatre, BUPA and US Steel. The first publishing sector user was Tolley Publishing who began using the system’s core financial ledgers linked to Publisyst, an industry-specific fulfilment software package for publishers.

Since then, in response to publishers’ evolving needs, a range of publishing process related modules and sophisticated Business Intelligence tools have been added to the core system to provide the fully integrated publishing management system, suitable for both book and journal publishers and distributors, that is available today.

AVATAR continues to be constantly updated, refined and enhanced to ensure it remains a powerful yet flexible management system, supporting ISBN-13 and also ONIX compliant, so that it can be readily customised by the AVATAR implementation team to meet the different needs of new clients like Quercus Publishing, Pen and Sword Books, Merlin Unwin Books and Pluto Press.
